Quality of Life After Ankle Arthrodesis Nail System Surgery
Ankle arthrodesis using an intramedullary nail system is intended for patients with end-stage ankle arthritis, deformity, or failed prior surgery where pain severely limits daily life. By eliminating painful joint motion and restoring alignment, fusion can deliver significant and lasting pain relief. Many patients report improved standing tolerance, better sleep, and reduced dependence on pain medication once union is achieved. Modern hindfoot arthrodesis nails provide a stable, load-sharing construct that often allows earlier weight bearing and a more symmetrical, less painful gait. Functional outcome scores such as AOFAS typically improve, reflecting better walking ability, balance, and confidence during daily activities. While ankle motion is lost, most patients regain the ability to perform routine tasks and low-impact activities. Fusion does involve trade-offs, including stiffness and increased stress on adjacent joints. However, when alignment is corrected and fusion succeeds, intramedullary ankle arthrodesis consistently improves comfort, stability, and overall quality of life.
