The Role of 3D Printing in Planning Complex Pelvic Fracture Surgery
3D printing is emerging as a valuable tool for improving surgical planning in complex pelvic fractures. Because the pelvis has a highly complex three-dimensional anatomy, understanding fracture patterns, displacement, and bone fragments can be challenging using X-rays and CT scans alone. Patient-specific 3D-printed pelvic models allow orthopedic surgeons to physically examine the fracture from multiple angles and gain a clearer understanding of the injury. These models can support preoperative planning by helping surgeons evaluate pelvic plate positioning, screw length, and screw trajectories before surgery. In selected cases, implants may also be contoured using the physical model, potentially reducing adjustments during the procedure. Beyond surgical planning, 3D-printed models can improve communication among surgeons and assist in explaining complex injuries to patients and their families. As technology advances, applications may expand to patient-specific guides, customized implants, and surgical simulation, making 3D printing an increasingly useful planning tool in orthopedic trauma care.
